Natural Light on Megan Cable

Megan Cable is a right-brained accountant always seeking adventure. I first came across her work through the online community of Women On The Road, and after following her adventures on Instagram for a while I found myself always uplifted by her words and images. One day, I reached out to her in search of a trustworthy accountant to refer to my clients. I was not surprised to have found in Megan a reliable person who knows her field well, but I was happy to learn more about her adventurous spirit and how she started the pursuit of her own fulfillment after living the corporate life for 8+ years. I think her story has power and many lessons to be learned from it. So take a look and don’t forget to share with a loved one who can also learn from or be inspired by Megan.

Who are you? How did you get to where you are today?

Born and raised in California. I grew up in a small town outside the southern gate to Yosemite (Oakhurst), went to school at Sonoma State and moved to San Francisco after college to start a great job in public accounting. I spent 8+ years living in the city and absolutely loving it. However, change started to call to me and I wasn't sure what that meant. I hit the road in a converted campervan with my then-partner to travel to explore the country. I worked, traveled and lived full time on the road for ~15 months. Unfortunately the end of my #vanlife, also meant the end of my relationship. The sudden end to both forced me to re-examine my life and myself. What do I want? What truly makes me happy? Currently in transition and on a path to self-discovery working on answering those important questions.

When and how did you decide to become an entrepreneur?

It's always been in my spirit but I've always been scared to listen to that voice. After realizing that somewhere along the way, I stopped listening to myself - I started on a path to rediscover my own voice. Following that voice is what opened me up to the idea of starting my own business - but for real, it was always something I had talked about doing "some day", "later", "when I had more experience". But I started to ask myself, "why not now?"

Tell us about your business

My brand is part logic and part creative and each one fuels the other. I am an accountant (CPA - current but inactive) and a creative. I work with small to mid size businesses to build accounting/finance processes from the ground up, maintain a financially healthy business, understand what the numbers are telling them and strategize to grow their business. I also do creative work with brands - this is a very open ended statement on purpose. It is meant to be open to interpretation, collaboration and inspiration. This can include helping a brand create content (mostly photos or stories) to use on their marketing channels, collaborate on new photos and refresh their website (or help them build a website from scratch), write stories, and share my passions.

What values are important to you and your business?

Authenticity. My business is entirely about pursuing a life I want to live and striving to help others do the same. I have learned that to love yourself, you must know yourself and know what you want - and in order to do all this you must be authentic with yourself and with others. I hope that if I put my authentic self out into the world, it will connect me with other like minded people. The bonus is that I may be able to help them with their business by sharing my skills and experience to help them organize, improve and grow their business.

What’s the thing you dislike most about being an entrepreneur?

Risk, stress, inconsistency.

What’s your favorite thing about being an entrepreneur?

Freedom to pursue the things that make me happy.

I believe it's my responsibility to send kindness and positivity out into this world.

What has been your most challenging moment in business?

Getting to the starting point and deciding "you can do this."

What has been your most rewarding moment in business?

The moments when I completely jive with a client and we get each other - I understand what they want and I know I can give it to them.

How and Why are you changing the world?

A selfish desire to obtain my own fulfillment through the feeling I get when I know I helped someone else. And because I believe it's my responsibility to send kindness and positivity out into this world - and hope that someone else will do the same for me someday.

What’s the importance of your location to your business?

Currently my business is location independent - but I hope to find a home base for myself and my business in 2019.

The Artist’s Way (book), daily journal, Camera + Adobe Lightroom, Instagram, Sewing Machine.

Are you a full time or part time entrepreneur?

Full time for about 6 months now.

Where do you normally seek inspiration?

Everywhere. But to name a few: friends, podcasts, books, Instagram, outdoors.

Is there a person, book, movie, album, or art piece that has influenced your life and work significantly? Who, what, and how?

I would say there's no one thing to answer this question with. But because it's the most current - I am in the middle of the 12 week workshop (book) The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It's an eye opening journey to discovering the artist in you, accepting that artist, cultivating that artist and sharing that artist. Artist can mean a million different things depending on who you are and what you want.

What are your thoughts about the current social media landscape in relation to small businesses?

Oooffff, social media. It's a changing landscape and can also be very consuming. I believe that there is a lot of good and bad to come from and to be on social media. I chose to focus on the good. I use it as a resource, find community in it, strive to be a positive influence on it and to find others doing the same. While I don't believe in just ignoring the bad and negative in this world - social media is not the place to go to battle with it. I take action in other ways of my life.

Who is another conscious entrepreneur we should know about?

I am incredibly inspired by Laura Hughes (@howsheviewsit) - creative and host of Women on the Road podcast.
